By March–April 2026, Polygon is the dominant chain ( due to their $USDC dominance since 90% of x402 payments are in $USDC). base and solana split the rest. arbitrum, abstract, hyperevm, optimism, celo, sei, and bnb.

x402 is an open payment protocol built directly into HTTP. When your browser or an AI agent hits a server that requires payment, the server responds with a 402 status code containing instructions on how much, which token, which chain, and where to send it. The client signs a stablecoin payment, retries the request, and the server verifies on-chain and serves the resource.
No accounts. no api keys. No credit card forms, you only pay the chain’s gas, which on base or Solana is a fraction of a cent.
Practical Applications of x402

An agent calls Claude, gpt, or deepseek, paying $0.001–$0.10 per request via x402 instead of burning a monthly sub. no api key. no account. j

I personally think the potential of x402 is still widely untapped. Currently we have promises of

hybrid rails: Visa and Mastercard on the foundation means x402 flows that settle in stablecoins but present as card transactions to legacy systems
Machine payments protocol (mpp) extensions for deeper agent negotiation
