What is it to work for Dao and how to get involve?
Learn it all from Mugglesect, Marketing Lead Contributor from Gearbox
In this Interview
His story from FMCG Brand Lead to Gearbox Marketing Lead.
What is like to work for a DAO & How to join one
and BTC in 2017 n all into ICO bubble Dentacoin in 2017
❓Can you do a short introduction about yourself?
Mugglesect
Hey, I am Mugglesect.
Currently the marketing lead contributor for Gearbox DAO.
I have previously worked with a top 5 global FMCG as their Brand Lead for South Asia.
❓How did you fall into the crypto rabbit hole & joined gearbox?
Mugglesect
TLDR is I really just joined a discord tbh.
Longer version is that I got my first BTC in 2017 after I learned about it through general reading.
Loved everything about it and its values. Was later approached by an alum that year who started working on a project of their own.
That project in itself never kicked off and I took up a trad job. While I was in the job, I was still consumed by crypto and loved the innovation happening on ETH.
Came across Gearbox really to farm a potential airdrop tbh but then i realized what the product is and just have been irrationally bullish on what it is capable of achieving over the next few years.
Stayed in the discord, forgot about the token, tried to help out wherever I was needed and then started aligning the marketing bits before the V2 launch and fast forward, here we are today. Quit my job in July 2022 and probably the best decision I made.
❓What is it like working in a very Dao heavy protocols?
Mugglesect
It’s pretty great tbh.
Initially, it can seem like DAOs are slower and complicated but as you grow and get used to a new working mechanism, it all becomes faster and more streamlined.
Gearbox DAO has had 47 GIPs till date or almost 1 in every 8 days, we currently have 2 subDAOs and 14 contributors.
The only way you can do a DAO right is if you truly believe in operating it as one.
Autonomy through initiatives and sub-DAOs while an organization-ish structure through contributors and transparency on what is being worked on as well as financial reports are crucial aspects.
Then taking the power of all of that and giving it to the governing token holders so as to not create sources of centralisation is effectively what creates a DAO. That’s really what we try to do at Gearbox as well. In terms of working, the key difference lies in two things:
Transparency: The DAO always has access to what you are doing and whatever you do should be transparent and true. This reduces deception and barriers to entry significantly.
Locus of control: As a traditional brand lead, I became used to making decisions on my own and having the ownership of the brand. In a DAO, while I take ownership of the performance of our comms, the decision making is never completely on me. Anything that requires changing the protocol details or massive comms changes are all decided upon by the VIBES subDAO for medium level changes or the main DAO in case of bigger decisions/treasury spends. While we may come up with the plan, it’s really up to the DAO or the sub-DAO to approve it for execution.
❓What are your thoughts on working for a dapp or a dao? any good & bad?
Mugglesect
Love every day of it, honestly. What makes Gearbox great is the community and the other contributors.
It’s very low BS and a highly productive set up. People are good at what they do and they do it well.
You have the approval of the DAO to deliver and thus bureaucracy is pretty much eliminated. Strategise, discuss, vote(if needed), deliver.
That’s it really. It’s one of the key reasons why we are already up for a new version of Gearbox despite launching the previous one just 3 months ago that produced over $100M in TVL increase.
❓Any advise for people looking to work for a dapp or dao
Mugglesect
Do it if you love the product,
understand the community and are able to handle uncertainty. Transitioning to a DAO can be tough, getting used to the voting, async working structures as well as having no manager can be a new experience for a lot.
The community effectively is your manager, always remember that you work to deliver what’s best for the protocol and the community will make sure that remains true. If you are okay with this, you’ll have a great time contributing to a DAO.
❓what is ur most magical & rekt experience in crypto?
Mugglesect
Magical will be joining Gearbox full time.
Rekt will be going all in on Dentacoin at the picotop of 2017 bull
❓What is your favourite meme?
Mugglesect
Gabriel Haines and Mother of Degens videos. Absolutely boss stuff, hooked to the new song
❓Any alpha for the community?
Mugglesect
Yeah, just tune in to the Gearbox twitter over the next week. Some major announcements regarding the possible future of the protocol underway!
❓What do you think is required to make it in crypto
I am still a pleb who dumped their LQTY bag to get rugged on CARROT, blz don’t take advice from me.
Jokes apart though,
I think you can always make it as a contributor.
Might not be in the financial sense but if you really are obsessed with what crypto is capable of, contributing to a crypto project you love is akin to making it.
